This impressive painting depicts one of the colonial military archangels.
A mid-eighteenth-century visitor to Lima describes the viceroy's bodyguard-all Spaniards-as 160 horsemen, with captain lieutenant, in blue uniforms turned up with red and laced silver; an infantry consisting of 50 halbardiers in blue with crimson velvet waistcoats laced with gold. The officers shoes were often fastened with diamond buckles, even pearls. Some wore heels of wrought silver. Small wonder the extravangances in the portrayal of an archangel !
This archangel is certainly not dressed for war, rather for a ceremonial portrait. His costume seems derived from the flamboyant style of the Netherlands, as set forth in Rembrandt's The Militia Company of Captain Frams Barming Cocq (mistakenly called The Night watch) . There the garb varies from light to black, sashes from wide to narrow; the broad-brimmed hats are heavy with plumes. The portrayal indicates the start of a romanticizing style. Our figure in its picturesque extravagance is out of this world.
In this painting, the richly brocaded coat bordered with gold, the broad edgings of lace, the contrasting shades in costume and wings make for extraordinary elegance. The silk stockings are gartered with flowing ribbons, calling to mind the order instituted by the English king in the 14th century. Curling ostrich plumes emphasize the broad rim of his hat. Here anatomy is subordinated to design and decorative effect.
An exquisite portrait, details are richly highlighted with bronze leaf, an indicative of the artists of the Cusco School of Painting.
Unique oil, it was painted with meticulous detail.
Look at the exquisite facial features and the color composition, it is just simply amazing . This remarkable painting has some subtle high-relief details. Bronze Leaf was used to accentuate finishing touches on this magnificent portrait.
